Zion National Park

June 2, 2025 annakwilmoth@gmail.com

With a roadtrip being necessary to attend the funeral for Cory's grandma, we decided to add some fun on the way. We try to do this when we have to make such a long trip as we never know when we next will have the time or be in the area. We decided on going to Zion National Park on our way home as it was our last of Utah's National Parks we hadn’t been to. It proved to be SUPER crowded as it was Memorial Day weekend(we had completely forgotten with our traveling). The radio stations were predicting 92,000+ people over the weekend in that park alone! We heard this, of course, after we were already at the park and witnessing the chaos firsthand.

We stayed the night in La Verkin and entered the park through Springdale. It was nonstop people and cars in Springdale. We still drove in as we hadn’t planned for parking and taking the shuttle. (Some places were charging as much as $75/day for parking!) We drove through, stopping at any open spots we saw to get out, take pictures, and hike around a bit. It was overcrowded so we didn't push too hard to stay in and decided to see if we could check out the visitor center. We circled the parking lot a few times before deciding it was a lost cause and to move on. We drove up to the northwest entrance (about an hour away) and went into the much smaller visitor center there. Then, we were on to take the drive to where it dead ends in a parking lot with a trailhead. This part of the park was far less crowded and we took the best hike of the day there. The trail went out to a viewpoint that was nearly a 360 view. You could see the red rock formations the park is famous for and the green, forested mountains that met them.

Lizard! One of the first we saw in the park.

Saw a cool rock, put it back after a pic.

We were both glad to finally visit Zion, but agreed we want to come back when it is less busy. We think when it is cooler out, school is in, and there isn’t a holiday going on would be best.
